What is terrazzo?

What is terrazzo?

Posted by JaxZeng on

Terrazzo has its roots as far back as 15th century Venice, when workers began using marble remnants to surface the “terraces” surrounding their living quarters. Remnant chips were placed in clay, dried, and then flattened by using just a hand stone and the body weight of the workers to grind the surface down. Over the centuries, new tools and techniques were developed to refine the process of finishing the floors, but the general idea is still very similar.

Today’s terrazzo flooring combines the beauty of traditional artistry with modern developments such as epoxy resin and recycled aggregates. Selected color combinations of natural marble, recycled glass, or plastic chips are placed in a matrix of pigmented cement or epoxy and troweled onto a prepared concrete slab. The process of grinding and polishing takes place upon setting and drying, exposing the aggregates’ full color. Sealers can then be applied to bring out additional luster and shine.

Terrazzo is a popular choice for floors, walls, and accent pieces, like tables, backsplashes, and outdoor patio surfaces. It comes in multiple colors and designs, which can be purchased as ready-made tiles. If properly sealed for water resistance, it can be applied to any area of your home, including the bathroom and kitchen. There are many reasons to fall in love with terrazzo; it is durable, attractive, and affordable. Generally cheaper than granite and marble, it can be an eye-catching alternative that doesn’t break the bank.

The style of a terrazzo floor can be tailored to complement any decor, from classic and traditional to modern and contemporary environments. The material’s inherent texture contributes to its aesthetic appeal, with a polished finish offering a glossy look while a matte finish provides a more subdued appearance. Terrazzo’s flexibility in texture and finish enables architects and designers to create spaces that reflect a desired atmosphere, whether it’s an elegant lobby or a sleek commercial space.

 Ok, I’m convinced! Now what?
