Terrazzo Overview

Terrazzo  is a composite material made by mixing aggregates such as crushed stone, glass, and quartz with a cement binder. After the mixture is set, it is ground and polished to create the final product. Based on the type of binder used, terrazzo can be classified into inorganic terrazzo and epoxy terrazzo. Additionally, terrazzo can be categorized based on the construction process into site-cast terrazzo and precast terrazzo flooring.

Mosaic Terrazzo

Mosaic terrazzo falls under the category of inorganic precast terrazzo flooring.

Benefits of Mosaic Terrazzo

Mosaic terrazzo is particularly suitable for commercial spaces, as each panel is uniquely crafted. This allows for excellent alignment with the designer's vision, enabling customization for each piece.

Production Process

Before we dive deeper, let's understand how conventional terrazzo is processed in the factory:

  1. Mixing: All raw materials are proportionally mixed in a blender.
  2. Molding: The mixture is then poured into specific molds.
  3. Curing: After a drying and setting period, the panels are removed for curing.

      4. Grinding: After curing, the panels are ground. It’s important to continuously water the surface during grinding to minimize airborne dust and to keep the panels cool to prevent warping.

Due to the size limitations of the molds, the original panels typically measure 1200x2400 mm or 1800x2700 mm before being cut to meet customer specifications.

Unique Features of Mosaic Terrazzo

Unlike standard terrazzo, mosaic terrazzo is characterized by the ability to manipulate the decorative aggregates within. This allows for the creation of unique patterns based on the designer's concepts.

However, because each panel needs to be individually crafted and placed, the production efficiency is significantly lower than that of conventional terrazzo. This contributes to its higher price point.

Practical Solution

For many design projects, mosaic terrazzo serves as a practical solution that effectively highlights and realizes the designer's vision.
